this thanksgiving, in between the turkey with all the trimmings, competitive games of dutch blitz, my little brother eli’s magic tricks, series of holiday movies, spiced apple cider, and fetching and decorating the christmas tree, i got the opportunity to teach my younger (age 13) sassy sister emery, the art of photo adventuring.

as part of a school assignment emery selected photography and me as her mentor to teach her about it. quite the honor. there might have been a tear, or two involved. we spent our first outing in pursuit of the perfect location, then talked off and on about technique, and how to use technique to help you achieve the kind of image you want. we then spent the remainder of our time exploring the angles, colors, lines, perspectives, lights, shadows of the space trying to find it’s beauty both obvious and hidden. i was quite proud of emery’s ability to see that beauty in the typically unseen. she started to change her perspective, she laid on the ground, got up close, stood back far, and began to view what was in front of her differently. there are many approaches to photography. but it’s ability to give you unique perspective on a situation/time/place/person has always been what makes me love it over and over again. cheers to you emery kate. i look forward to watching you grow into your own brand of great photographer.
